Farewell to a Lion Heart

Today, our beloved Rhodesian Ridgeback, Savannah, passed away in her sleep at the age of 13.

She has been solid part of Broadleaze Farm since we settled here. I have known and loved many dogs but Savannah stands out as a fine example of a life well lived. She was fiercely loyal and protective. She always protected the girls in our family. No one could approach them without her permission. When we walked in the bush she would scout out to the side instinctively seeking possible predators in ambush. Her thunderous bark could be heard a long ways off and was a sure warning to those of ill intent. However she had a warm nature and readily accepted those whom she perceived as our friends.

These were among my best memories of her. A puppy stretched out in the red African soil the same colour as her coat. The contentment on her face as she sat before a blazing log fire. Her exhilaration as she ran down the hill where the red grass grows.

She lies now on that hill looking out over Mkhambathini mountain, a fitting resting place for a true Lion Dog of Africa.
