Attack of the Monsanto Superinsects

Attack of the Monsanto Superinsects
We are hearing increasingly strident calls for GM technology as the answer to Africa’s food security problems. Africa is the last major frontier for the Biotech giants such as Monsanto to conquer. Most African countries have been resistant to the introduction of Biotech crops but lately with the assistance of philanthropic organisations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation serious inroads have been made. The history of chemical pest control should have taught us that by deploying these wonder weapons would only give temporary relief but would also apply evolutionary pressure on the target species. This will result in an arms race that only the side with the most resilience can win. I’ll leave it up to you to decide who will win. This article from Tom Philpott of Mother Jones lends weight to my view.
